Historically it had been increased in size, height and had several alterations including removal of the second floor stairs and external stone steps over the Smithy. The ceilings had exposed joists and no fire protection, but trimmers highlighted where the staircase had been. Internal walls once formed external walls and some internal openings were behind the plaster and formed with bricks.
The interior was remodelled as listed building consent with the National Park and minimal openings formed to reduce historical impact. Improved circulation and modern living compliment with natural insulation of the external fabric.
The result is an airy modern comfortable 3 bedroom family home in a spectacular location.
The work on Smithy Cottage subsequently won the LABC Building Excellence awards in 2023.
